ABOUT
SAVE OUR SONGBIRDS
THE GOLD AWARD.
The Gold Award is the highest award that a Girl Scout can earn. The project must consist of identifying an issue in a community that connects to greater issues in the world, creating a plan of how to approach that issue, and carrying out those actions to make an impact. Having been a Girl Scout for the past 12 years, it has always been a goal of mine to complete my Gold Award project, and I am thrilled to be achieving that goal while contributing to a cause that I care so much about.
THE PROJECT.
I am focusing on the issue of bird population decline.
-
Songbird populations are rapidly and dramatically declining largely due to causes that are preventable by humans.
-
Birds everywhere face the possibility of extinction over the next decades if we do not decide to act now.
-
Many of my community members stay unaware of this issue because they simply do not know to look at the resources.
-
That's why it is important that you are here!
-
They Are Birds...Why Should I Care?
Birds are key to your very survival.
-
Birds eat insect pests (400-500 tons per year) that would otherwise decimate agricultural crops, gardens, and other vegetation
-
Birds disperse seeds, spreading plants into new areas and increasing biodiversity
-
Being sensitive to toxins, pollutants, and environmental changes, problems detected in wild birds can be an early warning system that something is wrong environmentally
-
Birds maintain the delicate balance between plant and herbivore, predator and prey, ensuring that the habitats that store carbon, keep the climate stable, oxygenate the air, and transform pollutants into nutrients can function
THE CAUSES.
Why exactly are birds disappearing at an alarming rate?
