TODAY!
Save Our Songbirds is dedicated to reversing the songbird decline and conserving bird populations. Your action as a community member is critical to this work.
Ways You Can Help
Making a few, small changes can help set these populations on a trajectory to heal. This is a great space to learn more about how you can contribute to this cause. Choose one, or a few, and know that you are doing good for our birds and our planet!
Prevent
-
Keep cats indoors: having your cat outdoors increases the chance that they are endangering birds and spreading disease. Domestic cats will kill for fun, not for food. Cats are also simply safer indoors. If your pet needs you to provide shelter or food for its survival, it does not belong outside.
-
Avoid the use of pesticides: these chemicals devastate food and habitat sources (insects, plants) for birds and can kill birds directly when consumed.
-
Reduce light pollution: especially during migration, excess light can disorient flying birds at night. Turn outdoor lights off when not in use, and close the blinds at night when using lights indoors.
Create
-
Create habitat and food sources: plant native plants, shrubs, and trees in your yard to provide nesting spots, protection from predators, and both a direct (seeds) and indirect (insects) food source.
-
Create a meadow: Reduce manicured lawn space by allowing part or all of your lawn to grow to meadow with native plants and flowers!
-
Create visibility on windows: window clings, decorations, blinds, etc. should be put on windows to minimize the risk of collisions (visit "Resources" to craft up or purchase window clings and other bird-deterrents!)
-
Create water and food sources: put an easily accessible dish of water outside for the birds and install bird feeders with seed varieties to offer sustenance during winter and migration season!
Consume
-
Choose to drink and consume shade-grown items: coffee and chocolate are products often derived from farms that decimate forests to plant their crop for more sunlight, while these crops do not need full sunlight to grow plentifully. Instead, choose to purchase shade-grown items that protect bird habitats. See "Resources" for brand recommendations, or look for this logo at the store:
